Uncertain Democracies, Eroding Gender Rights, Enduring Challenges

The IPSA 2027 Congress theme is "Uncertain Democracies: Rethinking Governance in a Changing Global System" and you can read more here: https://wc2027.ipsa.org/wc/congress-theme

IPSA Research Committee 07 on “Women and Politics in the Global South” is concerned with issues of gender and marginalisation, beyond specific geographies, especially as they relate to women in the political sphere; to gender and development and to gender politics across issue areas. Five broad research areas encapsulate these concerns:

  1. Gender and Development
  2. Women in Politics
  3. Gender and Democracy
  4. Gender, Peace and Security
  5. Gender, Law and Human Rights

For RC07, the IPSA 2027 Congress theme is adapted as “Uncertain Democracies, Eroding Gender Rights, Enduring Challenges.” This reflects the main challenges faced across our interest areas–development, politics, peace and security and law and human rights. The hard-won access and rights of previous generations seem to be fraying along around the world, a casualty of democratic backsliding.

  • How do peoples, communities and states adapt?
  • What are the markers of backsliding and what are the focii of resistance?
  • How are institutions changing?

We invite panels and papers that speak to this political challenge, especially reflecting on the ways in which evolving cultural changes and technologies impact these challenges, accelerated by global transmission beyond state barriers.

Panels and papers on other themes and topics are also welcome. Needless to say, all proposals directed to RC07 must have a gender perspective.
